Late Night Congee in Seattle
Google Maps link here. Hooray for Geo-Blogging! The map above is the short walk from Uwajimaya to the Homestyle Hong Kong Cafe.
Uwajimaya (ooh WA jee MY ah) is the homebase for everything Japanese. Period. For you Chicagoans think Mitsuwa. San Franciscans can liken it to Ranch 99… but on steroids. It’s hella touristy, but it was really fun to walk around with Liana and pick up bags of goodies – familiar and idunnodoyouknowwhatitis stuff alike.
It was a little before 9PM when we got there, and the entire food court closed. Fifteen minutes early. Sadness. We walked around for a bit and found a place with the words: Congee, Rice and Soup painted on the exterior. I had to dig deep on the Internets to learn that the place was called Homestyle Hong Kong Cafe. When we walked in, I ordered the chicken congee. Too bad they were out of dumplings! Lots of good broth and the rice was cooked perfectly. I slurped it back at the hotel in seconds!
We’ve already started picking out tasty out-of-the-way / non-mainstream restaurants to take people when they come visit. Liana and I have talked… and our projected visitors (don’t worry, I haven’t asked anyone yet lol) may have extremely discerning tastebuds. And thankfully, some of you won’t care SO WE CAN EAT MCDONALDS AND ALL SHARE 20-PIECE CHICKEN NUGGETS FOR A WHOLE WEEKEND! lol.
YAY CONGEE!
