Classical Music + RPG = YAY.
Eternal Sonata, previously mentioned here, is the first RPG (or game for that matter) in recent memory that has gently caressed my subconcious, urging me to purchase an actual physical disc of delicious story-telling action.
The game is – for a lack of better words – pretty. It’s as if a decade’s worth of “Love is…” comic strips were compiled into three dimensions with the color balance and brightness levels switched to “burn retinas” (not really, but that’d be a pretty cool setting). The backstory of the game is a bit… alternative. Wiki has the deets:
The story takes place in a dream world which centers around famed piano composer Frédéric Chopin, who died at the age of 39 due to tuberculosis. The plot centers around the concept that three hours prior to his death, Chopin dreamed of a fairy-tale land, in which people with incurable diseases have great magical powers.
I really love the simple musical feature that allows the user to play various phrases of musical notes with other NPCs… thereby making new music. I haven’t looked into it much, but I’m sure there are a few combinations that weren’t previously mentioned. How cool would it be for the game to actually process the musicality of it… instead of “A to B,” “snippet #1 goes with snippet #2, 5, 16 and 36.” We could get some really funky stuff going on in there. That would be awesome.
The fighting mechanics are in real-time and allow for some precise button-ing… to block, shoot and dispense your standard items. Light and dark parts of the fighting arena also play a big part in your weapon arsenal… just like Lunar Knights on the Nintendo DS.
It drops on September 17… just eight days before the Halo 3 release date. Damn. With all the good things I just said about Eternal Sonata… should I even bother? I mean, pretty music and cute Anime characters are great and all…
…but nothing beats shooting rockets at your friends outta nowhere and tea-baggin’ ‘em with pride! LOL.
I just ruined this post.
