Slow Cooked Meats and Jazzy Beats

@ Bo’s Barbecue in Layfayette. LauLau and I ordered the “2-way combo” (ZOMG I CAN’T CHOOSE CHICKEN WTF!!!?!?!) with ribs and beef brisket and a plate of sides – potato salad, greens, bread and corn on the cob. Honestly, the food was satisfactory. The ribs were nice and tender and the brisket had enough – dare I say it – FAT to give each bite some good flavor… but the sauce had a twang in it that I didn’t appreciate. The prices were kinda high too. Like I said, satisfactory. But what really made the restaurant was the jazz quintet playing outside! JAZZ AND BBQ WOOP WOOP!
A few members of the Bay area Blues Society were unsurprisingly stereotypical – the drummer with enough facial hair and piercings to moonlight in a speed metal band, the aged bass player that doesn’t ever really look up, the tall and skinny trumpet player that can’t stand still, the keyboardist with one shoe on and one shoe off and the loud “gottasaysomethingaftereachsong” saxophonist. They followed some major jazz chord progressions and imrpov’d for the hour or so we were there. Good times, good times. For those just getting into jazz, here’s one of my favorite “walking to work” songs – John Coltrane – Giant Steps (the alternate take)… enjoy!
