Youth Speaks, The World Listens

I went with Jocelyn to check out the Youth Speaks Grand Slam Finals @ the Masonic Auditorium… atop the steepest hills in San Francisco. LOL. I’m actually in shape! All of the participants were between the ages of 15 to 18, which was astounding due to the poets’ complex ideas and thoughts. It was amazing.
The poems were syncopated… with an organic rhythm. Breath control, mastered. Silence and strategic pauses for expected applause… used as tools to enunciate their point. And, thankfully, they did. Especially to me. These teens, who are already experiencing “teenager-like” things that I have already buried in my mind, gave me so much to think about… on such a higher level than I normally operate. They have the scope of a thousand soothsayers, the billowing voice of a million generic campaigning politicians. And they have their entire life ahead of them.
They speak the truth.
…and I was fortunate enough to learn from them.
Write poet. Write.
