Vi-Blog: J-Human Behavior
Last weekend, while we (Cory, Jose, Jared, Kat, Elroy and yours truly) were @ the Taiwanese-American showcase @ Union Square, we found ourselves in the middle of a 15 minute mini-concert by some guy called J-Human (You can hear us in the background… sorry). He was a pretty decent at the beat box, but what was really cool was the fact that he was rockin’ something like the Boss RC20XL. The foot-controlled gizmo allowed him to record 4 / 8 / 16 beats in a row and automagically loop them over one another to make the once hokey “one man band” into something with a lil’ street cred. Jared even bought his CD.
I’ve been thinking about upgrading my ViBlog equipment (my Sony Ericsson k700i phone) to something a little more robust. I always dismissed the technolust in Chicago, but there are so many random things to film here, I’m beginning get the itch again. If multiple ViBlog posts are slowing down your computer, let me know and I’ll decrease the frequency in which I post ‘em. I already have a stock pile of lil’ clips that I wanna roll out by the week’s end. YAY. Another note: I hit the Internets looking for this guy’s Internet home… but no dice.
If you’re reading this, J-Human, start a blog dammit.
START IT!!! *SHAKES FIST*

I think KT Tungstall uses a similar “instrument” to achieve a “full band” sound when it’s just her on stage. Of course, she loops the guitar, the tambourine, some clapping and some “whoo hooo”s.

A long time ago at the Tibetan Freedom concert in Golden Gate Park, Beck took the stage on his own with nothing more than one of those beat/loop things and a guitar…It was amazing.

@Mark: Did she just make an appearance on Conan O’Brien a little while ago? I remember the loop machine action, but don’t remember who it was..

@Jason: I’m not sure if she was on Conan, but I saw a clip of her on the Today Show. I think I got the clip free from iTunes Music Store. While the quality wasn’t that great (such a small resolution), I was able to see that she used some sort of foot-operated loop machine.
