Farmer’s Market Makes Mouths Happy

I absolutely love farmer’s markets. I happened to be nearby one yesterday while running some errands, and I managed to pick up some fresh cheese, a loaf of freshly baked bread and some organic produce… including three Fuji apples. If you’ve never been to a farmer’s market, you might think that the incredible freshness and unrivaled quality would come at a premium price… but most of the time, this is not the case.
Take for example my Fuji apples. Originally from China (thanks Judy), this type of tree dangler is crisp and sweet, without the harsh tartness that you can find in a granny smith or even a red delicious. Because no two apples are created equal, slight blemishes or mild bruises may appear on the orchard and since farmers aren’t much of a wasteful bunch, they’ll sell different grades of apple at prices adjusted for quality. I chose three beauties from the $1.30 bin (it ranged from $0.80 – $1.50) and decided to have them for a quick breakfast this morning.
OMG deliriously delicious. I couldn’t believe I devoured all three, but they were so good. It’s subtle, but the Fuji apples had a soft, delicate sweetness that I have only had from lychees. It’s juices wrapped around my taste buds so suddenly, I had to smack my lips to try and taste it again. I never thought that something like an apple could be soooo… decadent. Tasty.
If you can get to a one, I’d suggest taking a morning off from work to support your local farmer’s market. Fresh anything can turn any blah blah meal on its head. The difference in taste is night and day.
Damn. I can’t wait until next week!
