One Loves One Loves One Loves…

Yesterday, I had a ton of dim sum with a grade school friend (I mean, I can call you that, right? Hee hee), played around with Guitar Hero @ Jay’s and saw Claire Dane’s ba-donk-a-donk in Shopgirl. It was everything that I thought it would be.
Synopsis for all you curious monkeys:
The story follows Mirabelle, a disenchanted salesgirl and aspiring artist who sells gloves and accessories at a department store. She has two men in her life: wealthy divorcee Ray Porter (Steve Martin) and struggling musician Jeremy. Mirabelle falls in love with the glamorous Ray, and her life takes a magical turn, but eventually she realizes that she must empower herself and make a choice between them.
Thanks to JoyJoy for the recommendation. The movie was good, but it ended too quickly for me. I wanted more flip-flop mess-with-my-heart drama. Even though it was an artsy-type film, I felt that there was too much unnecessary sex involved. It kind of made me uneasy halfway through. Oh well.
The leading men played perfect opposites and were endearing in their own way. Jason Schwartzman (of Rushmore fame) played the perfect scrubby social outcast and Steve Martin did an excellent job portraying just another emotionless tech-bubble millionare. I’ve loved Claire Daines, and her ultra cute short hair, ever since My So Called Life (Complete series currently out on DVD) was out on ABC (?), so I’m a little biased towards her performance. She played an almost too innocent “looking for real love” girl from Vermont. She’s so cute.
On a related note… Have you noticed that the first couple generations of Saturday Night Live alums have started to do more, for a lack of a better term, “Serious comedies”? Bill Murray has been doing it for a while with Lost in Translation / A Life Aquatic. Adam Sandler did Spanglish and Punch Drunk Love (which was kinda funny). Movies like the Royal Tannenbaums and Rushmore have had cult followings without anyone slapping their knees once. Call it boring, call it mature humor or intelligent comedies. Whatever. But it’s spreading… and I like it.
Again, Shopgirl was a good flick: It’s good way to spend a “what to do” weekend afternoon and definitely worth a rent when it comes out. I also deem it worthy of DATE NIGHT status. Hee hee. Cuddle away!
“Are you the kind of person that takes time to get to know, and then once to get to know them… they’re fabulous?”
Exactly.
